Shall we have puppies?

Walkingthrough the shopping centre and spying that lonely puppy who is obviously too big for his glass box is heart breaking, but it’s all too easy to leave your common sense in the car.

Pet shops are usually supplied by puppy farms, Puppy farms are large-scale breeding premises. The aim of puppy farms is to make money, no matter the cost to the dogs who are kept in cramped and cruel conditions. The puppies are sold through pet shops, internet and newspaper ads. Now part of you will be thinking that you have to rescue that dog, BUT it’s not that simple!

Crufts

After missing the opportunity for the last couple of years it was nice to be able to do some great networking and shopping at the worlds biggest dog show...Crufts.

Now, the UK kennel club has had some much deserved stick lately due to Pedigree dogs exposed and the recent follow up that highlighted some of the more disgusting practices still seen in the show world today. One of my colleagues at Italk fm is convinced Crufts stands forCruel Relentless Undermining For a Tortured Species!

A Dogs Dinner or Confused.com ?

After the fantastic interview on Saturday Alison has very kindly allowed us to re print one of her articles. Please take the time to read as no matter what you are told you should check out what is best for your own dog!

Common sense tells us that we need good, clean, appropriate food in order to provide our bodies with the building blocks of good health. We cannot possibly expect ourselves or our dogs to remain healthy if we're not providing all the proper nutrients our bodies need. We all know that.

Getting toilet training right

Toilet Training

House breaking, toilet training & potty prep are different names that dog owners use to talk about training their new dog where it is acceptable to pee and it’s also the number 1 reason why dogs become yard/outside dogs!

Now we are lucky enough to live in one of the most glorious climates on this planet however relocating a puppy to the back garden can be a bad idea.

When you first get a pup ideally around 8 weeks of age, they are like a sponge, taking in new information every minute, they need to get used to their new family, guests and the way that you live.

Animal Communication

The purpose of this blog is to encourage debate about topics a lot of other people would like to shy away from. So if you have an opinion please feel free to leave it below.

I consider myself to be open minded but I still use scientific facts to judge my own beliefs on. When I say belief, thats all it is, my own personal beliefs and these can change. I also think that Science still has some catching up to do, it wasn't that long ago that we believed the Earth was the centre of the Universe and the world was flat.

Kids & Dogs

It's been a while since I've managed to get on here and add a new post, however recently we had the opportunity to help in the rehoming of a gorgeous older dog by the name of Stella to a well deserving family, which has inspired me to leave a few hints and tips with regards to kids and dogs.
This is a topic which is very important as we seem to have the highest of expectations from our furry little friends and expect them to tolerate constant onslaughts from youngsters!
I am just as guilty as the next man when it comes to this.

Puppy Bites.

No matter how many times you have raised a puppy it is very easy to forget how hard it is to do properly.
Your new found friend needs a lot of guidance in the first few weeks of his life and if he doesn't get the correct guidance this can end up with the poor little fella being rehomed through no fault of his own. It isn't unheard of even for some dog trainers to get themselves in such a state that they forget what they do for a living and the information they give out to customers on a weekly basis and end up needing help.

Loyalty

There is a lot to be said for the dogs in our lives. When others around you are letting you down you can always rely on your best friend to keep a smile on your face.

So with this incredible loyalty what is the biggest killer of dogs in the western world?

Parvo? Puppy farmers? Road traffic accidents?

Nope. Behaviour and not always bad behaviour.

Dogs are put to sleep every day because they have broken the rules one to many times, yet they don't know your rules unless you teach them.

Method in the madness?

I have just recently finished a Mondioring training session that leaves me with a lot of hard work to do but something very positive to aim for.

The reason for this blog is that in the UK if you mention clicker training to other trainers you will get the fans and the haters in almost equal numbers. A lot of the best trainers including the majority of the APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) are clicker trainers but there is almost always the "old school" who still use yank and crank methods or lure reward techniques.

Using food as a training tool!

During our class in Fuengirola someone made a very valid statement, one that is brought up on a regular basis.

"I don't want to use food because she will learn not to do it when I don't have any and I don't want to carry food around with me for the rest of my life."

The other thing that is also heard especially by those that are still following the outdated pack leader theory or by trainers that have limited knowledge in learning theory is "She should do it out of respect" .
