Toilet Training House breaking, toilet training & potty prep are different names that dog owners use to talk about training their new dog where it is acceptable to pee and it’s also the number 1 reason why dogs become yard/outside dogs! Now we are lucky enough to live in one of the most glorious climates on this planet however relocating a puppy to the back garden can be a bad idea. When you first get a pup ideally around 8 weeks of age, they are like a sponge, taking in new information every minute, they need to get used to their new family, guests and the way that you live. If after a week you decide that your new pup and your expensive carpet don’t mix very well then the chances of Fluffy becoming a garden dog increase a lot. This can cause the fluffster to lose confidence and when he or she does have to meet your friends or your new date you will have a whole new problem to deal with…. So…..how do we get it right? The basics are very simple but thatdoesn’t make it easy Take him out frequently and wait with him until he goes to the loo. Praise and reward when he goes in the right place. Be consistent in supervising your puppy for a whole weekend and you will be pleased and surprised with how quickly your puppy can be clean. If you can’t keep an eye on him, restrict him to a crate or confined to an easily cleaned area. Above all learn to think dog! They will be trying to communicate with you all the time but it’s important to remember they don’t speak English or Spanish. They will use their body language to warn you.Your puppy will usually start to sniff around and turn in circles when he is about to go to the loo. Don’t wait! Quickly encourage your puppy to follow you outside and be ready with a tasty treat! No Punishment! If your puppy has an accident, clean it up calmly, using biological detergent solution if appropriate. Avoid pine smelling chemicals as the smell of amonia can work against you. Do NOT scold your puppy. Punishment of any kind may delay house training and harm your relationship with your dog. Make sure your puppy learns by trial and success not trial and error!
