A disgrace!!!

There is an increasing fashion for those people that live abroad and have a pet, to put the dog in to kennels and go on holiday..........for good!

I find it difficult enough to understand how people can do this, (it usually means they haven't invested enough time in their dog to have bonded properly). However, a so called dog trainer to leave his dogs that have worked with him as a stooge dogs been reliable companions and never thought about dumping his sorry backside, is a disgrace.

Times are hard and money is tight but this is not acceptable, get the dog rehomed if you have to but leaving the dog in a residential kennel is unfair on everyone involved especially the dogs. No one is looking for new loving owners.

So, as you may have guessed this is the situation we face at the moment. The heartless person involved booked them in for a 4 day long weekend. That was 4 weeks ago. We have had 1 email promising payment but to no avail, we reached him by phone once, when he said he was in a meeting and would call back within 2 hours. Obviously he never did and has since switched off his Spanish mobile and the UK number has been left to constantly ring out.
I have tried both numbers a total of 50 times!
He has also sent an email to all his clients saying that he will have 1 of the dogs PTS because of his "problems"???? The dog is a lovely (but fat) husky. He has also cancelled all his classes and even passed his clients on to other trainers.

Here is my predicament, if I rehome these dogs then we become a soft target for other people thinking of doing the same thing. Do I name and shame this man, make an example of him ? Create a facebook page, email his clients and colleagues and let them know exactly what he has done and warn everyone that loves animals to stay well away from the fraud and obviously rehome the dogs or do I just rehome the dogs?

I genuinely would love your input so please leave your thoughts below.

I'd be of the inclination to name & shame & rehome the Dogs to caring homes.. If a person had a GENUINE reason, for a prolonged kennel stay, I'm sure they'd do everything in their power to contact you & keep you up to date with their predicament. This is abandonment. Such a shame a "professional" acts in this way, especially with regards to his comments about having the Husky PTS. I'd want to know if my trainer acted this way. I've heard of this happening before..but it was always with older or sick animals. People just think everything is disposable.

I didn't have the chance to get back to you all. Firstly thanks for your input it was invaluble but he is still out there! Paul Kassell has been located in the north of England / Scotland!! He is still training dogs and is taking money from unsuspecting people! Keep your eyes peeled gang....he is not to be trusted!

wow what a patetic excuse for a human. As you've said it's not the dogs fault they didn't do anything wrong you probably will end up rehoming them to people that will give the dogs the attention and love they need but until then i think the 'owner/trainer' in question should be named and shamed, even if he does turn up with payment for the dogs can you honestly say you would want to let him have them. They might not be so lucky the next time he 'goes on holiday'. Name and shame all over fb and twitter. Good luck best wishes carrie and the hounds

I would name and shame... but only state the facts (try keep some of the emotion out of it - hard to do I know) I would then re-home them to good families... would never trust a dog into the care of that man again... hope that helps Tracey & Wendell

Name and shame him. Are the dogs chipped? It´s a legal requirement here. If they aren´t you can rehome them and if he comes back, there's nothing he can do about it. Unfortunately it doesn´t sound like he will be coming back .

Hi mate, I don't think that purely rehoming the dogs makes you a soft target, this type of thing has been going on for many many years and its rife in the UK as well as Spain. That said, I would really like to know who this is so that I could let people asking about training know to steer clear of him. With all the will in the world, its hard to name and shame without it getting emotive. I'd just do the name part! Also, may be worth checking out the legal situation over there because there are specific laws against abandonment of animals in Spain (lots of UK people do it when they re-patriate - disgusting behaviour). Maybe you could sic the law on him over there in case he does return. This aside, I hope you are enjoying your Spanish adventure! M xx

Its an all to common problem in Spain Nando :( My boss now used to work for seacrest kennels here in nerja and it happend to him all the time. It has happend alot over the last 8 months with money being short and people moving back to the UK. Its just heartless and should never happen. But its going to happen to you again im sure. I would ask for a credit card number as a deposit method and put in the contract that if they are a no show then they can and will be charged for rehoming fees or some thing like that. If the owner knows full well they are coming back for there dog then they should have no problem with it, if how ever they are thinking of bolting then maybe they will think again. As for the name and shame I wouldnt go down that road my experience of business in Spain is just to keep your head down and move on. You dont need to get caught up in the BS that can come with it. So sad that another dog has ended up this way :( hugz to the husky

Maybe take a pre-authorisation of the card like they do at hotels - if the person is planning to bolt then they may well give you a card that they then immediately cancel and you are back to square one. At least if you've taken the pre-authorisation you can get some cost back

Hi, I think Josh's comment is right about taking a credit card and including a clause in your agreement that you will charge for everyday they are late in collecting their animals, therefore not really giving them an easy escape or maybe taking a really large but refundable deposit if you feel uneasy about a particular person. To name and shame may make you feel better, but it may also alert other idiots that you will rehome their animals for them.

It's tricky Nando but from a professional point of view, I would bite my tongue this time and do my best for the dogs - by finding them a great new forever home. Best way to prevent this happening to you again is to change your admission procedures, payment up front for everyone, and for new clients, a worthwhile security deposit which is refunded when they collect their dogs. Getting involved in what could turn out to be an unpleasant tit for tat row with this man could turn nasty and backfire on you guys - when you really don't deserve the flack and are just setting up a new business. Hope you can find a lovely home for those poor dogs, Helen x
