A Dogs Dinner or Confused.com ?

After the fantastic interview on Saturday Alison has very kindly allowed us to re print one of her articles. Please take the time to read as no matter what you are told you should check out what is best for your own dog!

Common sense tells us that we need good, clean, appropriate food in order to provide our bodies with the building blocks of good health. We cannot possibly expect ourselves or our dogs to remain healthy if we're not providing all the proper nutrients our bodies need. We all know that.

Blinky

For those of you that don't already know, a couple of weeks ago I picked up a stray from the side of the road. Now, if I had the funds and the time I would stop for every dog I passed but since I don't, I have had to man up a bit and only stop for those that are not capable of looking after themselves.
The reason I stopped for this little girl was she was sitting on the side of the road, a speeding van came round the corner and narrowly missed her but she didn't move, she only cowered waiting for the impact.

One fantastic year!

Well a whole year has passed since we touched down in the sunny south coast of Spain and it has been a fantastic year! We thought we would celebrate the anniversary of our arrival, our Christmas do and dish out the first ever awards to our gang the only way we know how.........a party!

We set the venue inLa Luna restaurant, which is based in Mijas Costa - the most central point for all our customers but people came from far and wide to join us. Those that travelled nearly an hour from Almogia were beaten only by Sarah Hoskyn and Rich Clarke who flew over from the UK for 1 night only!

Its nearly Christmas and although the Pet lodge is fairly quiet before the xmas madness we have been very busy as always!

November has seen a lot of work taking place around the Doghouse and with a new roof being fitted to the house, 3 new extra large kennels being installed in the block, a new toilet area so the dogs can find a suitable spot without being attached to a human (nobody likes being watched), the exercise area being measured up for fencing and buying a new van for drop off and pick ups we hardly had time to stop and catch our breath!

Wet Dog!

It’s coming to that time of year……wet dog!!!

It is sometimes tempting to leave your dog's coat long for the winter, thinking that they need the extra hair to keep them warm, but this is not necessarily the right thing.

Long coats are high maintenance - they take longer to dry, tangle more easily, and collect debris. Your furry friend will often return from a walk wet and with mud, leaves etc clinging to the coat, and those that live in the campo –well that is the norm for the winter! They will need to get dry and warm in order to be comfy which is a challenge for a long coat.

Getting toilet training right

Toilet Training

House breaking, toilet training & potty prep are different names that dog owners use to talk about training their new dog where it is acceptable to pee and it’s also the number 1 reason why dogs become yard/outside dogs!

Now we are lucky enough to live in one of the most glorious climates on this planet however relocating a puppy to the back garden can be a bad idea.

When you first get a pup ideally around 8 weeks of age, they are like a sponge, taking in new information every minute, they need to get used to their new family, guests and the way that you live.

Whats been going on @ In The Doghouse

So much has been going on here at in the Doghouse that I have not had much time at all to get blogging so I'm going to give you a quick run down of what been happening!

We have had our new exercise/training area converted and it is over 10 times the size of the original one so any Pet lodge residents will be in for a lovely surprise as soon as it all fenced off!

Now we also have the space to be running some more of the hands on type training days and have many planned including Scent day workshop, Trick dog club, K9 First Aid and many others so get ready for a busy winter!

Intensive

Well, we have just finished our 7 day intensive course for those that are thinking about working with dogs and boy did we have fun!

On Monday morning bright and early a group of people turned up at In The Doghouse with an eager look and the slight awkwardness of meeting a group of strangers for the first time brings, but after a brief introduction I couldn't shut them up (as is always the case with dog lovers) :-)

So we set about discussing different points such as where dogs come from and looked at some of the research that has been carried out into raising wolves vs dogs.

Animal Communication

The purpose of this blog is to encourage debate about topics a lot of other people would like to shy away from. So if you have an opinion please feel free to leave it below.

I consider myself to be open minded but I still use scientific facts to judge my own beliefs on. When I say belief, thats all it is, my own personal beliefs and these can change. I also think that Science still has some catching up to do, it wasn't that long ago that we believed the Earth was the centre of the Universe and the world was flat.

Kids & Dogs

It's been a while since I've managed to get on here and add a new post, however recently we had the opportunity to help in the rehoming of a gorgeous older dog by the name of Stella to a well deserving family, which has inspired me to leave a few hints and tips with regards to kids and dogs.
This is a topic which is very important as we seem to have the highest of expectations from our furry little friends and expect them to tolerate constant onslaughts from youngsters!
I am just as guilty as the next man when it comes to this.
